The John Evjen family arrived in Grant County in 1920. John was a native of Porter, Minnesota, and had married Agnes Osterkil in Dell Rapids, South Dakota. They had one daughter, Adelle, born to them while living in Dell Rapids. They moved to section 5, NW¼ in Troy Township. Agnes had lived in the Troy vicinity when her parents, the H. T. Osterkils, came to the area in 1905. The Evjen family moved in with the Osterkils; the house they occupied through the coming years was built in the summer of 1920. The family were members of the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Troy. During the time it continued in Troy, they took an active part in its work.

Nine children were born to this union. Adelle, Mrs. Harry Kucker, is presently living in Watertown. Harry and Adelle spent most of their lives in the Troy area and owned the former Hoffman farm south of Troy (east ½ of section 30) for 20 years. In 1963 Harry had the misfortune of losing his left arm in a farm accident; the following year they had a sale and moved to Watertown. Their family consists of Rose Ann (Mrs. Marlyn Lindahl), Norma Jean (Mrs. Myron Robish), and Lee.

Helen, Mrs. Soren Engevick of Eden, South Dakota, was the only one to have a wedding in the Immanuel Lutheran Church there. They have five children, Luther, Maurice, Katherine, Marshall, and Albert.

Mrs. Andrew (Ruth) Haugen, of Lake Mills, Iowa, spent several years teaching in rural schools before going into the service as a member of the Spars during World War II After returning home, she went to St. Olaf College and went as a parish worker to the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, where she was married. They have five children, Linda, Diana, Marilyn, Hartwick, and Daniel.

Raynard married Eva Sundstrom and began their married life on the John Evjen farm, moving to the Charles Aronson farm, which they purchased in the Stockholm area (NW ½ of section 32 in Stockholm Township). They have six children, Daniel, Elaine (Mrs. Glen Koch) of Watertown, Lois (Mrs. Don Harrington) of Watertown, Mary, Ardis, and Kenneth at home. They are attending the South Shore School. Their family belongs to the Tabor Lutheran Church in Strandburg.

Nordis, Mrs. Dale VanHorn, is Raynard's twin. She has spent most of her life in Portland, Oregon. She went out to find work in 1942, met and married Dale. They have five children, Dale, Jr., Craig, Karen, Jeffrey, and Kevin.

Vivian, Mrs. Eldor Larson, resides in Park Rapids, Minnesota. Eldor was also a Grant County resident, the son of George and Annie Larson of Strandburg. He has been Superintendent of several schools in both South Dakota and Minnesota. Vivian and Eldor have seven children, Deland, Noreen, Allen, Kenneth, Julie, Richard, and Sherrilee.

Lloyd is married to Joyce Forman, daughter of Henry and Clara Forman. They began their life together in Pierre, South Dakota, but soon moved to Codington County to farm, and when Harry Kucker left the farm in 1964 they bought it from the Kucker's and moved there. They have also purchased the old Evjen farm and use it for extra pasture land. No one lives there. They have five children, Nancy (Mrs. Robert Amberg); Virginia (Mrs. Paul Huselid); Bryan (also married) of Watertown; Lowell and Lucille are still at home, attending high school in the Waverly school system. The Lloyd Evjen family belong to the Tabor Lutheran Church in Strandburg.

Loyal (Lloyd's twin) married Dorothy Tesch. After spending the first part of their married life working in Watertown, they bought the former Johnson farm (5W¼ of section 28, Stockholm Township) in the Stockholm area where they now reside. They have three children, Lori, Scott, and Lisa. They are all attending the South Shore school system. They attend the Lutheran Church in South Shore.

The last child of the John Evjen family was John. He married Joyce Nelson and they live in Lake Mills, Iowa. He works in Albert Lea, Minnesota, for Relco Rafters. He and Joyce have two children, Janice and James.

Raynard, Lloyd, and Loyal all played on the last baseball team that Troy had in 1946. John Evien passed away in 1952 and Mrs. Evjen died in 1968. They are buried in the Troy Cemetery, one mile north of Troy.

This picture came from Rannei's house in Surnadal, Norway. This is the farm house near Troy, South Dakota, that was built by Halvor and John. All 9 of John and Agnes's children grew up in this house. Later their oldest son, Raynard, took over the farm. Raynard and Evangeline and their 5 children moved off the farm in 1964 and the farm buildings have been vacant ever since. In the later 1960's, Lloyd bought the farm (approximately 160 acres) from his brothers & sisters and still owns it to this day. Because of the sandy soil on the farm, Lloyd has mostly used the land for grazing stock cattle.
